Hems

You can finish hems in many ways. This will depend on the finished result that you prefer and the type of fabrics you’re working with. It is also worth considering how you feel about hand stitching and how your machine works with different fabrics. A crisp cotton or denim is best served with a machine hem but a soft or heavy wool will be neater with a hand stitch hem. It’s also worth thinking about where the hem is. If it’s along a trouser hem will there be a chance of a heel catching the stitching? Is your fabric stretch? Does it need to move with you? Is it going to show?

The Hems I’m going to concentrate on are both machine and hand finished. We’ll look at the weight of fabric and the best finish for use. Why you might use a hand over machine finish and visa versa.
