Sewing from Scratch
This an 8 week course to build your confidence and start you off on your dressmaking journey.
Perfect for those just beginning to sew and those who’ve not sewn in a while. I take you through all of the basics plus a few extras. From working through the maze of patterns to getting to grips with zips and sleeves.
Sewing from Scratch is held at the Willow centre in Cringleford, Norwich. Wednesday mornings 10-12.30pm.
From 10th January with a break for half term on the 21st February.
There will also be an option of an extra 2 weeks at the end should you want a couple of weeks to get to grips with a particular technique or start a project with guidance on hand.
Spaces limited to 8 students.
How will the course work?
This course will cover the essential techniques and things to look for, making sure you have a good grounding at the start your sewing journey. This will be done through technique videos and a regular Class. The videos will give you the shoulder eye view showing how everything goes together, no more leaning in or around someone else. You’ll get just the right view. Perfect when you’re at home and need a refresh.
We’ll sit with a cuppa and work through any sewing issues you may have come across. (I’m not qualified for the other issues, please find help elsewhere)
There will be a private Facebook or What’s app support group for you to discuss any thoughts that may come up between times and to show everyone how you’re getting on with the techniques. I’ll pop in every so often to answer questions.
What will I learn?
We’ll go through everything you need to know to begin your sewing journey.
Week 1.
Fabrics and patterns. What those symbols actually mean. Measurements. How and where to measure for accurate sizing.
Week 2.
Darts. Why do we need them and what do they do?
Week 3.
Different seams and finishes for both woven and jersey fabrics
Week 4.
Pockets! Different types and best practice for side pockets
Week 5
Facings. Why use them and how to get a good finish.
We’ll also talk interfacings
Week 6.
Zips. Both Lapped and Invisible.
Week 7
Sleeves. Different types and how to set sleeves in.
Week 8.
Hems. Machine hems on both woven and stretch fabrics as well as hand stitched a hand stitched hem.
There will also be other other tips and techniques we’ll come across and I encourage you to ask as many questions as possible whilst in class.
Keeping notes and samples as we embark on the class will give you something to look back on as you work on your own projects as well as the online element of the course. By the end of the course you’ll have a set of samples to refer back to when you’re building your very own me-made wardrobe.
